Goodtech started the TurboCron® project in 2001 to develop and supply products to the energy sector. The first objectiv is to industrialise an energy recovery system from aluminium electrolysis cells – an active cooling concept.
An active cooling concept is based on an innovative change to the traditional way of cooling an electrolysis cell. The concept gives 'mature' industry a tool for increasing production on existing cells. As a technological barrier to production increase is removed, the concept is expected to become an element of the new generation of cells. An active cooling concept also provides the opportunity to recover the heat lost at high temperatures from the electrolysis cell. This gives the concept a clear environmental profile by drastically improving energy utilisation in aluminium production. Developments take place in close collaboration with Hydro Aluminium AS. This collaboration is formalised in a long-term agreement. Hydro Aluminium's commitment and participation ensure the necessary dynamism in the project as they will be the first user of the concept. The company will continually assess other products and development projects which may provide new business opportunities in the energy sector.
An actively developed cooling concept will also be applicable in other energy-hungry industries with processes involving high temperatures.
